The Death of Justice

[Note: This is something I wrote a while back but it never made it on to my website. That makes it somewhat dated. Still, I think that the ideas are worth expressing so I went ahead and posted it.]

The verdict is out: no death penalty for Zacarias Moussaoui, a man partly responsible for the thousands of Americans killed in the September 11th attacks. As I listened to the report on the radio, I was outraged and at the same time deeply saddened. Later, I read in an AP article that as he was led out of the courtroom he said, "America, you lost. I won." He attacked our country, killed our innocent civilians, and then used our own system to weasel out of justice. Now, he will live out his life in a prison where he will no doubt enjoy privileges that many citizens in our own country don’t enjoy.

What does this tell us about the situation of our country? To me it spells out the death throes of a judicial system gone seriously awry. Our people have lost any sense of true justice when murderers live and rapists are given little or no sentence. Our judicial system is pre-occupied with rehabilitating criminals while it neglects its God-given purpose to bring justice. I fear for the future of our nation, when I recognize that one of the major signals of the impending downfall of a society is the failure of justice.

People get caught up in the debate of whether or not there should be a death penalty, but they fail to realize that there is a moral code that transcends any human authority. The Bible clearly states that a murderer deserves death. This concept even pre-dates the Ten Commandments. The jurors who voted to spare the life of this evil man share in his crime by not bringing him to justice. They will have much to be accountable for when they stand before God in judgment.

As Christians, it is our responsibility to vote for lawmakers who will ensure that the government fulfills its true purpose according to the Word of God. Most of all, we need a revival in America; one that will bring the people to their knees before God and change their whole concept of the world and politics. I plead with you, fellow Christians, to pray with me, ever more earnestly, that God will bring about this revival.

Do not accept a ransom for the life of a murderer, who deserves to die. He must surely be put to death.          Numbers 35:31

or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.        I Peter 2:14

When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, the hearts of the people are filled with schemes to do wrong.        Ecclesiastes 8:11
